THE STARS REACH OUT TO A PLATOON OF 19 SERVING IN IRAQ
During the summer of 2004 the 17 year old and 16 year old Arizona Star Teams sent care packages to a platoon of 19 soldiers serving in the U.S. Army’s 1 Calvary Unit outside Sadr City in Iraq. The platoon is in recon and goes out at night in Humvees to draw fire so they know where the enemy is located. Care package project organizer Kevin Cable contacted neighbors and friends and asked for donations for the care packages. Coble then organized a party of Arizona Stars team members and together they stuffed each package with soup, beef jerky, magazines, lozenges, DVDs, chapstick, gum, candy, Sleep America t-shirts, and more!
This community project was the concept of Coble. While on a trip to San Diego, Coble (age 17) ran into David and Elaine Hirsch. They are the parents of Eyton, one of Coble’s childhood friends. Kevin and Eyton were neighbors who played together when they were younger. As they caught up and reminisced about Eyton, Coble learned his long time friend was serving in Iraq. He was touched and inspired to reach out to Hirsch and the other 18 soldiers serving in his platoon. Hirsch’s Mom, Elaine, was extremely thankful for the outpouring of support and assured Coble of the excitement the soldiers would have upon receiving their care packages. Coble said about this project, “It was a lot of fun to do and the response from donors was overwhelming!”
